When I got out of business school some more than 25 years ago, I was trained classically to run a very large company, and for whatever reason, my impressions were that it was all about the numbers.

It probably took a good 10 years of my career as an entrepreneur to figure out that, yeah, the numbers count, and at the end of the day, that is what you measure—but it’s the people that make the numbers.

So my encouragement today, while I’m sitting here sipping a cup of coffee, is to focus on the people. Get the best people you can possibly find. They will make the best numbers for you. You’ve got to have good strategy; you’ve got to have systems; yeah, the numbers matter—you got to calculate the things. Get the right people in the right seats; they will make all the difference in the world.
